Welcome to the Refuge Metro Mel!!!!

I know it has been awhile, Lazy disinterested no new Nokia to add to the Refuge, guilty as charged until I found this. I don't know a lot about it, from the internet I've learned this is one of 7 figurines designed by James Jarvis. Evidently he designs figurines and this is fairly rare. Welcome to the Refuge Metro Mel!!!! I honestly don't know what else I can say about this. It would be awesome to find the whole set I have a new search on Ebay now there are 6 siblings that must find their way to the Refuge. Anyway I'm still here keeping old Nokia safe from the cold hard reality of obsolescence and with that I bid you a Merry Christmas a Happy New Year and thank you for reading my silly blog.

Questions or comments please feel free to contact me. You can follow me on Twitter at @Nokia_Refuge or contact me at Nokia_Refuge@outlook.com.

Again the purpose of this blog is to save as many neglected or forgotten Nokia as I can. So if you have any that are in a closet or a desk drawer somewhere collecting dust. If you hate it and want to get rid of it or you love it but have no use for it and want it to live on send it to me. I will make sure that its retirement is comfortable and safe on my 1/8 acre refuge. Again I may be able to chip in for shipping but unfortunately unable to buy them as my wife would FREAKING KILL ME.

And it doesn't need to be a phone if it says Nokia its welcome here.

Nice little fella and a phone

I was just recently introduced to Listia. It's kinda like Ebay but instead of money you bid with credits. You can of course buy credits but also you can earn credits by watching videos or doing surveys. Any rate I was looking around Listia and found this it's a Nokia 3650  the first Symbian Series 60 smartphone to appear in the good old USA 2003 I believe. It is a 2g GSM phone 900/1800/1900. It came with a whopping 4 mb of memory kinda cool thing I was surprised to find is there is a full size MMC card slot SWEET!! It was loaded with Symbian v6.1 with a 104 MHz ARM 9 rockin this bad boy. And it has a VGA camera at 640x480 pixels. It turns on but asks for a sim don't know if I can get it working have not tryed all my sim cards yet. I kinda like the retro rotary key pad look. Well that's that this is a pretty short post buy I hope you enjoy. Nothing new has come to the Refuge so I'm not sure what to write about next. So I guess I'll see you next time remember if there's a old Nokia that you don't need or want for God sake don't destroy it let it live charge it once and awhile give it the respect it deserves it was one the best phones you ever had.

Oh and by the way I had no out of the pocket on this beauty.

Sex lies and Nokia Internet Tablets

I lied about the sex part sorry,  so this week I've managed to get the whole Nokia Internet Tablet family. I love these things. Before you read on I realize I don't have the Wimax N810 I still feel I have the whole family. I would gladly except one if you have one to donate I could even pay shipping. With that being said lets get this party started.

First up the Nokia N770 it came out in November 2005 it had a OMAP 1710  running at 252 MHz which isn't a super computer but it did what youa asked it too, tweeted from it last night. It had a whopping 64 MB of RAM, and 128 MB of internal FLASH memory and you could extend virtual memory  up to 1 GB, remember when that was alot. The screen was 4.1 inches, 800×480 pixels at 225 pixels per inch with up to 65,536 colors and thats not terrible didn't have any problems reading anything when I was playing with it. Had WiFi Bluetooth 1.2 dial-up access, USB both user-mode, and non powered host-mode. It takes a MMC this one has a 64 mb beast in it. I got this one off of Ebay for a little over $5 out of my pocket and it is perfect I can't find a scratch on it. This is a great find and is very welcome here at the refuge.

Pic is upside down screw it!! This one came out in 2007 OMAP 2420 with a native speed of 400 MHz but only ran at 330 MHz on OS2007 but it will run 400 MHz if you put OS2008 on this little fella. It has 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash memory. It had b/g Wifi Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 OTG. The screen was also 4.1 inches 800×480 at 225 dpi, and I say if it aint broke don't fix it. And strangely enough it has 2 full-sized SD card slots, one internal and one external. I love the Gigabits I don't think I will be happy until my phone has TBs. It had a web cam hidden in the left side very James Bondy, you use Skype and it even has a FM radio. I got this one
off Ebay also this one was a bank buster I paid $80 for this one and I will tell you why. First it came with

the Nav Kit never used every thing still in plastic so awesome. Second it came with not one but two 32 GB

samsung SDHC cards brand new still in pakage those were between $30 and $35 online conservatively so I

got this like new Nokia N800 and Nav Kit for $10 to $20 bucks freakin awesome!!!!!!

Love when it comes with the box. So moving on.

My N810 this was my first found her on craigslist back when I had some hidden cash. This was $100 like new in box. Don't have a pic of this one turned on I guess after 2 years the battery had lost it's charge I'm sure it still works. This one came on in 2007 it was alot like the N800 it had a slide out keyboard and it changed the popout camera to a front facing one that seems to be on everything now days. It too had 2 sd card slots but they took away the FM radio to bad love having a FM radio.

Well there you have it I also have the N900 but that was a phone, it belongs in the family but maybe if a WiMax N810 comes to the refuge I will revisit this. My N9 could also be here but. So thats about it for this time.

I have a tease for my next post.

Lost in the shuffle

So it's been a few weeks since my last post. Been kind of torn about the Microsoft thing, and I'm having a hard time finding inspiration. So just a few things I wanna talk about. First it's the end of an era regardless of what Nokia does. Can they come back of course, can they win my heart back? YES! But I don't know where I'm gonna be. Its gonna be a long hard road if and when they get back into the device arena.

I'm excited to see what Jolla will do but until they will ship to the US I'm out until then. I've heard NEWKIA a few times but I don't know what that is all about.

So I have wondered many times if anyone gets what it takes to compete with Android. I think Apple and Microsoft could but they can't get their heads out of the sand. How can anyone or anything grow if everyone is always saying "you're the greatest"" this is the coolest phone ever" I see 2 major flaws in Apple.
First they gotta put a memory card slot in the damn thing already! I personally would be more apt to buy one if I could get the 16gb and add memory to it later. But I'm a power user and would love to have a Terabyte on my phone. And second screen size but that is because of popular trends. Personally I like a smaller screen.

Next is Windows Phone first kill Zune oh my gosh its so slow hate it refuse to have it. faster to upload to Dropbox or Skydrive and stream it back. Second notifications let me explain, I love Nokia but I have other phones I have a few Androids a few Iphones 2 Palm Veers a N900 and a Blackberry Q10. I have used them all in my opinion here is how IOS and Android excel, say I want to follow @nokia on twitter and I really like what they tweet or I am waiting for one in particular. On Windows Phone I have to stop go to their feed and finger through all of their tweets, and that would be fine if I had the time, but I don't. In Android as well as IOS you can goto their profile and just turn on the notifications, now I get all their tweets. I want this I need this I have 42 feeds that I follow in this way, can you imagine. This is the number one big papa reason Windows Phone is not my Main phone. Without this type of notifications I would rather carry Symbian if I had to choose I can do everything I need except maybe watch Netflicks and I don't "need" that.
Microsoft is now solely responsable for Windows Phone and it devices. So I Guess I don't care anymore.

So anyway there you have it I feel better. I have more devices to write about but I've been pretty busy. Been trying to make some time so please bare with me.

Two little guys made it to their new home and Two gadgets.

This week I've been so busy being Papa, sorry this took so long, And I wrote and posted last nice and verified and the post and this morning it's gone. I think it has something to do with the Blogger app It Gone!!

So here we go this week the refuge got two phones from Kevin E. he is a Writer at Daily Mobile and Nokia Innovation. I've followed him on Twitter for a couple years. Great guy!!!

First up is a Nokia 252 in box it came out in 1998. Its my first analog Nokia which rocks no way its usable but it still a welcome addition. It had 6 distinctive ring tones and the phone book stores up to 75 entries do you really know more then 75 people anyway really? It came with a 1150 mAh NiMH Battery which gives you up to 2 hours analog talk time.and a stand by time of up to 36 hours. I did try to charge it but it made a "I'll Burn your house down" sound with and without the battery. It is still a welcome addition to the Refuge and will be well taken care of.
Second is a Nokia 7070 Prism in box a nice little phone. It has come from a long way away. It appears to be from Russia. Read this in your best Dolph Lungren voice "A Nokia from Mother Russia" This little guy is small and light love it when its open the grooves on the back make it look like a solid phone which is pretty cool. Back in 2008 this phone came in a 900 / 1800 GSM which I'm sure this one is and a 850 / 1900 regardless when I get some time I'm gonna throw a sim in it and see if it will make a call. So the only issue is it's stuck on Russian gotta fix this if I can, did some research and having a rough time. There are some people at my work that may be able to help. I'll update if I succeed in setting it to english.

Third thing that Kevin sent to the Refuge is this bracelet he got at the Nokia Lumia 1020 release after party in New York City. OK I don't know why but this is so cool. Kevin you ROCK!!! I love anything with Nokia on it and this I consider rare I assume only the people that where there got these.
And last recently I discovered Listia It's pink it's loud and it has Nokia on it. Cost me $1.65 Sweet!!!

My road to the Nokia N9

So the story starts alittle over a year ago. I realize the N9 was released well over a year ago but I didn't really hadn't become a quest as it was still very expensive. At any rate I had been charged with the choir of running a crew of guys to replace the obsolete nurse call system in one my cities two hospitals. It was going pretty rough the company I was working for wasn't hiring quality people for me. Unrealistic time lines so fourth I digress.
So with that being said I was under a lot of stress. My boy was 2 years old and I am a very hands on father. We only have one car so I was taking my wife to work taking care of the boy and working "whew" "exhausted".  So I was drinking a lot energy drinks not eating well and I started getting these odd feelings a disconnected feeling as if there was a small earthquake happening.  I was carrying a dark grey Nokia N8 at the time great phone as of writing I'm trying to save a silver one and bring it to the Refuge.
The N9 was always in my mind I had tried to win one yeah go figure wink wink but to no avail.
One I was on one of the floors checking on the progress and I had one of me spells, o e of the guys asked a nurse to take my blood pressure it was a little high well a lot high like 220 over something I was advised to seek medical attention that was the last day I had an energy drink and I seem to have more energy now. So the doc said I should get away and rest for a little while.
So a plan forms in my head "I will quest for the N9" so off we go I grab the wife and boy and we head to Portland Oregon. I tweet when I have service about how I shall hold this fabled N9 it will be mine I tell myself. We get to Portland after stopping at Multnomah Falls
to get some pictures with the N8 and a Galaxy S3 but that's another story. In my weakened state I agree to go to Seaside Oregon a place we discovered as newlyweds.
After a few days of no Internet or cell service we decided to go to Seattle to the air museum and there is a Fry's up there I call and yes they have a N9 oh yes two birds one stone lets get gone!!
So lets get back on track so I get to Fry's oh so excited I walk through the doors I can sense, it is here I feel it. I look for the phone selection umm no not seeing it no one seems to be available to help its OK it has to be here I see a Nokia oh its the Lumia 800 and over priced. I look some more finally someone asks "Can I help you find something" oh yes dear god thank you, NOKIA N9!!!!! "yes we have one" takes me back to the 800. I decide he is a cruel Heartless human he says here it is hands me the double boxes with the blue box inside. Upon closer inspection I discover it is in fact the NOKIA N9 I have found it!!! eureka!!! I say can you open it I'd like to hold it there are 2 plastic boxes protecting the phone obviously one plastic box is not enough of a theft deterrent. I look at the worker as the cat in Puss in Boots looks when he is trying to persuade someone. "NO well we can but you will have to pay a restock fee" What!! are you freakin kidding me!!! Really I said I'm thinking of buying this he says oh you should take this up to the check out and they will take it out of the box after you pay for it. At this point I'm pissed and heartbroken. I said you are the worse sales person ever you don't even have the sticker on the correct product I point the the 800 tag he says "Its right see this is the new Nokia Lumia 800" I said "I asked to see the N9 you showed me this phone" he said "Thats right it the Nokia Lumia 800 N9" I give up dejected I leave the store. So close yet so far. The time I had for my quest was over and I had to return home the next day.

On the way home I was on me way back to the refuge when I was contacted Via Twitter by a great gentleman. I don't know if I can say his name without asking him so I won't, that if I would like to experience the N9 I could come to his house and check his out. Sadly I had to decline Me and My wife had to work the next day and simply didn't have the time.

I did get a Black 64gb N9 from Ebay a few months later and I love it had a few issues at first cause it was was from Asia and needed to have a different software variant. This thing is a work of art great phone.

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you my second post:

Today is the first of what I hope to be many. I had intended on writing about my adventures in procuring my Nokia N9, But today from a co-worker I received 2 Refugees.

First is the 2610b it was budget minded 2G phone released in 2006 had a 1.6 screen with 113ppi pixel density. Baby we have come along way. This beast had a generous 3 MB for up to 300 numbers It had GPRS but nothing else no EDGE no WLAN no Bluetooth and no USB. This guy was a no nonsense phone for people that needed to make phone calls and an TXT or 2. But you had to be prudent wit you use cause with the 970 mAh battery it only had about a 3 hour talk time. It has PAC-MAN and MS PAC-MAN Sweet!!!! unfortunately will only play for 30 seconds as its a demo probably no chance of getting the full version. Just got this phone so it needs a bath and some TLC. But I shall do my best to revive this little soldier and make sure it has a comfortable retirement.

The second Refugee I got today is the 3120b from Cingular it to was budget minded 2G phone. It was released in 2004 had a 1.6 screen with 113ppi pixel density. This little brut could hold up to 256 phonebook entries with 4 fields per entry It had GPRS but nothing else no EDGE no WLAN no Bluetooth but it did have a Pop-Port. gonna have to look that one up. Another no nonsense phone for people that needed to make phone calls and an TXT. It had the same BL-5C as the 2610 but boasted up to 6 hours of talk time. And yes Snake oh how I missed thee. However I don't have a sim to put in it so sadly I can not play. And on another note the battery for this little guy was swollen and not usable the bonus was its the same battery as the 2610b.

I have actually used the 3120b and loved it. I was updating the computer network for a company that makes French Fries and other potato products for Wendy's and McDonald's. I was carrying a Nokia N900 at the time and evidently there is a high indecent of spying occurrences within the French Fry industry and they don't allow any device capable of capturing Video or Photographs so I got a 3120 from somewhere. The only cool thing saw out there I would have taken Video or Pics was a exhaust pipe that would blow these gigantic smoke rings like 10 feet or more HUGE (you can see it from the freeway so don't try to turn me in) and I could get super close, and it would have been some cool pictures and video. So for a month or so I carried this little guy with no complaints whats so ever.

At any rate both seem to be 100% functional, not pretty but both are welcome additions to the Refuge.

Questions or comments please feel free to contact me. You can follow me on Twitter at @Nokia_Refuge or contact me at Nokia_Refuge@outlook.com.

Thank you and thank you Crazy Cal for the phones.

So here I go, a few months ago I was watching a YouTube video of a gentlemen destroying a Nokia N95. Upsetting very disturbing, may have cried a little. I start getting this idea, you see the Nokia N95 was my first Smart phone my gateway phone as it were. Looking back 8 years ago, a man in a Strange country meeting my future wife and now mother of our 3 and a half year old. She took me to where her little sister worked in a mall at the Cell phone store. Inside were marvels of technology and wizardry unfamiliar to this simple man from Boise Idaho. Phones that could be attached to overhead projectors and would run your PowerPoint presentations. Phones that you could watch movies on, listen to music, and one phone that had a 5 Mega Pixel camera OH how the Gods have smiled upon me. This little two-tone wonder I could barely contain myself "oh I have to have you" I muttered lightly under me breath. Pay the lady I thought reaching for my wallet as I ask beautiful bride to convert the price into dollars US, I could see the words floating out of her mouth as suddenly I felt faint and my wallet fell back into my pocket. I don't remember the exact amount but looking back all I can think of is "that's more then rent". I am devastated.

Fast forward after struggling with INS for 18 months my wife has safely made it to the USA. As we start our life together we get a credit card, then 2, a few more. Again the Gods have bla bla bla. At any rate With my lovely wife's blessing I order 2 brand new never touched beige and silver devices of POWER, the NOKIA N95-3 $619 each. way more then a rent payment. Everyday I wake up kiss my wife and check the tracking number yes! it's close! soon it shall be mine! Finally I see they will be delivered the next day should I call in sick, have my wife do it yes its fool proof  "I'm so sick I had to get my wife to call in for me" That morning as I close the door to go to work pleading with her that it would have worked, I have been betrayed!

So after the longest day of my life I do not simply come home I fly, up the stairs and key, key where is oh got it I open the door and on the counter is a Amazon box open oh no. After realizing my wife had opened hers I pickup mine as if it was a new born. I deftly cut the seal with a butter knife with a precision neurosurgeons would be envious of, I open the as if I was Indiana Jones recovering some lost Holy relic of some forgotten ancient people. I peer inside, eyes straining to see this treasure hidden within this chest. And there it is MY N95-3 and there you have it the rest is history.

This was the defining moment in my entire mobile life. The N95 served me well for many years and was the beginning of my love affair with Nokia.

So with that being said I come back to the video and my idea. Still in it infancy I am going to try this blogging thing and the plan is I will offer refuge to any forgotten, abandoned or other wise neglected Nokia device. If you have a Nokia that you don't want and are unsure what to do with it send to me. In return I will try to provide updates through this blog of my rescues and some sort of review of said device I can't promise anything but I will keep the device safe and I will love and care for it as if it was mine. I may be able to help with shipping but sadly can not offer any other compensation as I am a simple man with a small family.

If you like you can reach me at @Nokia_Refuge on Twitter. This is my first post so a Facebook page is coming as soon as I figure it out. Oh and an E-mail.

Update Email : Nokia_Refuge@outlook.com

   Thank you
